Where to Eat Seafood in Xiamen Like a Local

Xiamen lives from its sea, and seafood is the headline of any visit. Yet tourist-oriented restaurants can be hit-or-miss. After 13 years living and working here, Hengtong Holiday (+86 137 9925 4912) shares where locals actually eat.

Eighth Market (Ba Shi)

The city's most atmospheric wet market, where locals shop daily. Lobster, abalone, grouper, mantis shrimp, flower crabs, oysters and squid are on offer at prices about 30% below scenic-area restaurants. Buy your seafood, then take it to nearby cooks such as Ah Ming Seafood Processing or Kaiyuan 141, who charge per dish (steaming around RMB 15, stir-frying RMB 20). Compare prices and ignore "helpful" strangers offering to lead you.

Shapowei

The old harbour now blends fishing boats with creative boutiques. Many small places along Daxue Road are run by fishing families; the seafood comes straight off the boat. Shapowei Harbour Dapaidang and Wunnei Seafood are reliable. Eat at sunset overlooking the sheltered harbour.

Zengcuo'an

The "most artistic fishing village" is great for snacks — oyster omelettes, grilled oysters, squid-and-tofu hotpot — but large seafood dinners here are aimed at tourists and can be overpriced.

Lianhua North Road / Jiangtou

Local families and business dinners gather here. Restaurants such as Shuyou, Yazhu and Haoqingxiang offer comfortable rooms, consistent quality and a full menu of premium seafood for RMB 150–250 per person.

Must-Order Dishes

  • Steamed grouper — the simplest test of freshness
  • Boiled octopus or squid with wasabi soy
  • Soy-braised fish (jiangyou shui) — Xiamen's classic home style
  • Oyster omelette — crisp outside, creamy inside
  • Stir-fried flower clams with beer
  • Salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp with roe
  • Ginger duck — not seafood, but unmissable in Xiamen

Avoiding Traps

Confirm whether prices are per 500 g, ask for fish to be weighed alive and cooked immediately, and clarify "market price" dishes before ordering. Keep your receipt; call 12315 in case of disputes.

All restaurants used by Hengtong Holiday have been vetted over 13 years with transparent pricing — no commission kitchens. Our Chaoshan tours also include a proper beef hotpot and a Nan'ao seafood feast. Book: +86 137 9925 4912.
