Gulangyu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site off the coast of Xiamen, is one of China's most charming islands. With car-free cobblestone lanes, colonial-era consulates, lush banyan trees and the only piano museum in China, it attracts over ten million visitors a year. Here is Hengtong Holiday's (+86 137 9925 4912) complete guide.
Tickets & Ferry
The island itself is free, but you must buy a ferry ticket. Ferries depart from the Xiagu Terminal (Cruise Center) to either Sanqiutian or Neicuo'ao pier. Standard round-trip tickets cost RMB 35; RMB 50 for premium cabin. Book in advance via the official "Xiamen Ferry" WeChat account, especially on weekends and holidays.
Main attractions require separate tickets, or you can buy a combination pass (RMB 100) covering Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, Haoyue Park, the Organ Museum and the International Lettering Museum.
Must-See Attractions
Sunlight Rock
At 92.7 m, this is the highest point on the island. Climb early (before 8 a.m.) to avoid crowds and enjoy panoramic views over red-tiled rooftops to the Xiamen skyline.
Shuzhuang Garden
Built in 1913 by a Taiwanese merchant, this seaside garden features the "Twelve Caves" rockery, the 44-Bridge and the outstanding Piano Museum with over 100 antique instruments.
Haoyue Park
Dominated by a 15.7-metre stone statue of Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga), the park offers one of the best vantage points for photos of the Twin Towers.
Longtou Road
The island's busiest food street. Try the handmade mochi, beef jerky, "Miss Zhao's" pastries and the famous Zhang Sanfeng milk tea.
One-Day Itinerary
