Practical advice for travelling in Xiamen & Min-Yue
Xiamen and Chaoshan have a subtropical maritime monsoon climate. October to April is ideal, with temperatures of 15–25°C. May–September is hotter (28–35°C) and typhoon-prone but good for swimming. Spring Festival brings spectacular Yingge dance parades.
Choose Siming District (Zhongshan Road, the Gulangyu ferry, Zengcuo'an or the Convention Centre) for easy access. Our partner hotels are all 4-star/boutique in Siming, with sea-view and family room options.
Tourists depart from the Xiagu (Cruise Centre) Terminal; round-trip tickets cost RMB 35. Book 3–5 days ahead via the official "Xiamen Ferry" WeChat account during holidays. Ignore "guides" offering unofficial access.
Xiamen cuisine is light and sweet: satay noodles, oyster omelette, ginger duck. Chaoshan is famous for beef hotpot, braised goose and clay-pot congee. The region is not spicy — bring chilli sauce if needed. Choose seafood stalls with clearly marked prices.
UV is strong year-round — wear sunscreen even in winter. May–September brings showers and typhoons; carry a folding umbrella. Use a waterproof pouch for your phone on sailing trips.
WeChat Pay and Alipay are ubiquitous; carry some cash as back-up. International cards work at major hotels and malls but rarely at small shops.
Use a licensed agency (permit beginning "L-"). Suspiciously cheap tours hide shopping commissions. Hengtong Holiday writes zero shopping and zero optional fees into every contract, with RMB 2,000/pax compensation.
